Why We Built Elara — A Letter from Our Founder, Jamaal Burton

May 15, 2025

There are moments when the world forces you to stop asking what if — and start building what’s needed.
Elara was born from one of those moments.

For years, I watched as Black students navigated systems not built for them — systems that celebrated their excellence while starving their institutions. I saw brilliant minds graduate from HBCUs, only to face closed doors, underinvestment, and a network gap that talent alone could not cross.

So I stopped asking what was missing. And started asking: what would it take to build something that lasts?

Not a Project. A Platform.

Elara is not a campaign, a cohort, or a charity. It’s a platform — designed to support students, uplift institutions, and change how power flows.

We are here to:

  • Build infrastructure, not just awareness

  • Invest in systems, not just scholarships

  • Convene leaders, not just audiences

We are not here to inspire alone — we are here to equip. Because the next generation of Black leaders doesn’t need permission. They need scaffolding. They need capital. They need access that doesn’t come with compromise.

Why HBCUs?

Because HBCUs are not just educational institutions. They are ecosystems. They’ve produced some of our most brilliant public servants, entrepreneurs, scientists, and artists — often with half the resources and twice the responsibility.

But celebration is not enough. HBCUs don’t need applause. They need alignment. They need funding, fellowships, pipelines, and public partnership. That’s what Elara was built to provide.

The Work Ahead

This year, we’re launching a bold slate of programming:

  • The Ascend Fellowship, supporting high-potential HBCU students and alumni with leadership development and executive mentorship

  • The Elara Civic Corps, connecting future changemakers to policy and public service

  • A bi-weekly Fireside Chat series with national voices in business, politics, media, and beyond

  • The HBCU Futures Summit, a national convening that centers equity, cultural capital, and generational wealth

But none of this works without community.
Elara is being built by and for the people who know that equity isn’t about visibility — it’s about systems.

If you’re reading this, you’re part of that system. Whether you’re an alum, a donor, a student, a policymaker, or a dreamer — we invite you to build with us.

Let’s make legacy structural.

With purpose,
